About MiSSC

Cafe Beignet and MiSSC:Dedicated to helping children around the world.

The Milk Saving Starving Children Foundation was founded on June 18, 2001. Its purpose is to provide vitamine-fortified powdered milk to starving children locally and around the world. It was founded as a result of a speech given at the United Nations on world hunger. In that speech, it was stated that over 30,000 children under the age of 5 die every day from starvation. That's approximately one child every three seconds.

MiSSC is a grassroots organization fighting world hunger at a basic level. Since 2001, shipments of powdered milk have been sent to orphanages in Ecuador, Haiti, Mexico, Africa, Beliz, Italy, and Ghana. They were delivered by members of our local community who volunteered to carry the milk to its destination. The first shipment of 220 quarts was carried by local doctors to Guayaquil, Ecuador. The next 220 quarts was taken by a local priest to an orphanage in Haiti.

Our delivery system is simple: People who care and know of a specific need ask for milk, and it is provided. It is that simple, and thus that reliable.

Hunger is everywhere. Every time we get on a plane, we are going somewhere that hunger lurks. If you would like to carry milk to some worthy location, we are happy to provide it. In the words of founder Eugene Daniel Lucas, "Anyone who comes in and says, 'Hey we're going to Central America and we'll take some milk,' gets milk."

Consider the simplicity and the power of that concept. Many people who have wanted to do something about world hunger on a personal level now have a vehicle to do just that.

To buy the milk, MiSSC accepts tax-deductable donations, but that is not its only source of income. MiSSC operates Café Beignet at 801 North Washington Avenue, in Scranton Pennsylvania. It sells French style beignets, specialty coffies, and other coffee house faire.

Through the simple act of buying a cup of coffee, or having a snack, you can now fight the starvaton that will claim another child's life by the time you finish reading this sentance.

This is what MiSSC is about: a simple, common sense approach to attacking world hunger at its most basic level.
